Martensitic Stainless Steels

These grades offer better erosion or wear resistance because of the high hardness values that can be obtained through heat treatment. They do provide some corrosion resistance; however are not as resistant as the austenitic grades.

Alloy Properties
Representative AlloysCA15, CA6NM.
ApplicationsFor good wear & corrosion
LimitationsCA15 is prone to cracking in heavy sections; special procedures improve stress corrosion cracking resistance
Typical UsesAerospace, gas turbines, marine, petro-chemical, pulp and paper, food processing
MachinabilityFair to good, based on grade & conditions
WeldabilityRequires post-weld stress relief
Corrosion ResistanceGood in mildly corrosive environments; good erosion resistance, some grades have very good resistance to cavitations
